背景介绍
Transmembrane protein 97 (TMEM97) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-residing protein that belongs to the EXPERA domain-containing family whose function is overall understudied. TMEM97 is also linked to cholesterol homeostasis, Niemann-Pick disease, Alzheimer disease, and neuropathic pain. Intriguingly, TMEM97 was recently unveiled to be the sigma-2 receptor (S2R), an enigmatic drug-binding site that had been pharmaceutically targeted for decades in treating psychotic disorders.(PMID: 39995975, PMID: 38290642)
