Mitochondrial 18 kDa protein (MTP18), also designated as Mitochondrial Fission Process 1 (MTFP1), is a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial inner membrane protein that functions as a critical regulator of mitochondrial dynamics and cell viability. Perturbations in MTP18 expression have significant consequences for cell fate: knockdown leads to cytochrome c release and apoptosis, while its overexpression is linked to excessive mitochondrial fragmentation in pathological contexts such as chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity and gastric cancer cell apoptosis. Collectively, MTP18 serves as a multifunctional mitochondrial effector that integrates phosphoinositide signaling, nutrient sensing, and membrane remodeling to govern mitochondrial morphology, quality control, and cell survival.
