背景介绍
Serotonin N-acetyltransferase (arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase; AANAT), an indoleamine originally found in the pineal gland, is considered as an antioxidant or a free radical scavenger, and promotes the synthesis of glutathione, which is an antioxidant. This enzyme catalyzes the metabolism of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) into Nacetylserotonin (NAS) an intermediate in the synthesis of melatonin and there is an evidence for the neuronal presence of NAS in the mammalian brain.(PMID:11985883; 20488463)
