B3GAT1, or beta-1,3-glucuronyltransferase 1, is a gene located in humans that encodes a member of the glucuronyltransferase gene family. This enzyme plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of the carbohydrate epitope HNK-1 (human natural killer-1), also known as CD57 and LEU7. Research has implicated B3GAT1 in various disorders, particularly those related to the immune system and infections. For instance, the enzyme's role in synthesizing glycosaminoglycans contributes to the structural integrity of cellular surfaces, which can influence susceptibility to viral infections.
