背景信息
Hemopexin (HPX) is a plasma protein with the highest binding affinity for heme (hemoglobin) of any known protein. It is predominantly expressed in the liver and is an acute phase response protein whose synthesis is induced following inflammation. The primary function of HPX is to serve as the main carrier of heme transport in plasma, preventing heme-mediated oxidative stress and loss of heme-bound iron by binding to heme. HPX plays a role in a variety of hemolysis-associated disorders including malaria, hemolytic uremic syndrome, and dengue hemorrhagic fever.
